Product Overview: The Focus 1 Open Frame DC Drive is a compact motor controller designed to regulate DC motors ranging from 1/4 to 2 horsepower. Manufactured by Emerson (also known as WER), this open-frame drive uses SCR-based control circuitry to manage armature and field outputs for precise speed and torque control. It accepts input voltages configurable for 120VAC or 240VAC operation via internal transformer jumpers. Commonly found in industrial automation, packaging, and material handling systems, it provides reliable performance in applications requiring variable speed DC motor control.

Common Failures
Two primary failure modes were observed with this product. In some instances, the motor did not run, showing an output of 15 VDC with the motor connected and 120 VDC with it disconnected. This was traced to defective zener diodes. In other cases, certain controlled components failed to power on due to a broken circuit board trace, resulting in physical damage.
Repair Approach
The defective zener diodes were replaced to restore proper motor functionality. For issues related to control components not powering on, repairs included circuit board trace repair and the addition of missing terminal screws. Preventative replacement of various electrolytic capacitors was also performed.
Testing & Quality
Comprehensive testing was conducted, including burn-in tests and verification with motors. The repaired units were tested at customer-specified settings, ensuring functionality with a 240VAC input without switching to 120VAC. All repairs were reviewed by qualified technicians.
