Line Isolation Monitors

Control System Labs can repair your Line Isolation Monitor (LIM). Made by Schneider Electric and Square D the LIM is an electrical safety device used in healthcare facilities, laboratories, data centers, and other critical applications to monitor the electrical insulation between the AC power distribution system and the earth ground. Line isolation monitors are designed to meet the requirements dictated by the National Electric Code.

The LIM works by measuring the leakage current between the power system and ground and comparing it to a preset threshold. If the leakage current exceeds the threshold, the LIM will trigger an alarm or initiate a shutdown of the power system. They are available in 2 milliampere and a 5 milliampere hazard current detection levels.
The LIM typically consists of a current transformer, a sensing circuit, and a control circuit. The current transformer is placed around the main power conductors to measure the leakage current. The sensing circuit processes the current signal and compares it to the preset threshold, and the control circuit activates an alarm or shutdown mechanism if the threshold is exceeded.

Failures in the LIM can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

• Component failures

• Wiring errors

• Environmental factors

Common types of failures include false alarms, incorrect readings, and failure to detect hazardous conditions. These failures can result in costly downtime, safety hazards, and damage to equipment.  It is important to ensure that the LIM is compatible with the specific electrical system and that it is operated within its specified limits and parameters.
