Power Supply
Power supplies are electronic components that convert electrical energy from one form to another, such as from AC to DC, or to regulate the voltage or current to a desired level. Simply put: it supplies components with electric power. Like any electronic component, power supplies can experience failures due to a variety of reasons, including:
- Component Failure: This can occur due to a failure of one of the components in the power supply, such as a transistor, bulging capacitor, or diode; cracked PCBS and overstressed semiconductors are also common failures.
- Overload: Overloading the power supply can cause it to fail, especially if it is being used beyond its rated capacity.
- Short Circuit: A short circuit in the power supply or in the connected system can cause it to fail.
- Aging: Over time, components in the power supply can degrade, leading to decreased performance or complete failure. Cracked solder joints are common in older power supplies.
- EMI/RFI Interference: Electromagnetic or radio frequency interference can cause the power supply to function improperly or even fail.
- Temperature: Extreme temperatures can cause components in the power supply to expand or contract, leading to failure.
- Power Surge: A power surge or spike can cause a power supply to fail if it is not properly protected.
