A programmable logic controller (PLC), also known as a programmable controller, is a computer that assists in the control of manufacturing processes that is reliable, compact and rugged enough to withstand industrial environments. Companies use PLCs for control of processes and machines, as in with robots and assembly lines. They can be small in size with tens of inputs and outputs or they can be larger, with thousands of inputs and outputs.
There are many possibilities as to why a PLC may fail and the harsh environment of industrial sites can contribute to these failures. This includes, but is not limited to: heat, incorrect installation, lightning storms, power strikes and surges, power supply failures and other reasons. This downtime can be very costly for a company, as PLCs are vital to many industries.
